Journalistic Judo

In the spirit of martial arts' using an opponent's force against him/her, Dr. Elam (a.k.a. PegE) & Pat (a.k.a. the Queen) engage in a little journalistic judo in the "war on obesity," using claims & statistics provided by & about members of the weight loss industry to show how ineffective & even harmful the so-called war can be.

Articles used in the discussion include Michael Hiltzik's LA Times article "Lap-Band maker Allergan wants it both ways" & BodyMatters Australia's managing director Lydia Jade Turner's article "A weight off your mind."

The Nutrition Journal article "Weight Science: Evaluating the Evidence for a Paradigm Shift," which contains guidelines for shifting weight-centered health campaigns & interventions to effective & ethical care consistent with the evidence base, can be accessed here.

The Association for Size Diversity & Health's press release can be read here. Find out more about ASDAH's Aug-12-14, 2011 educational conference in San Francisco here.

Today's music includes "Freedom" by Suchi Waters Benjamin & "Fit, Fat & Fine" by Candye Kane.
